Rep. McCarthy Praises Troops & Thanks Constituents This Independence Day

Statement

Date: July 3, 2012
Location: Garden City, NY

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY04) praised America's armed forces on the occasion of this year's Independence Day. She issued the following statement:

"This week, Americans from coast to coast celebrate the country's independence in ways that unite us all and demonstrate our national identity and character."

"On the occasion of Independence Day we celebrate our freedom and our democracy, and a way of life that allows individuals to pursue happiness and take active part in a representative government.

"We honor our troops serving around the globe to keep us safe in an increasingly dangerous world, and we honor our veterans who have made great sacrifices for all Americans through the generations.

"Without them, we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms that we do today.

"This Independence Day we also celebrate our best qualities and shared values as a nation -- patriotism, compassion, industry and resilience.

"And of course it's an opportunity for Americans to spend time with those we love, our families and friends, with barbecues, fireworks, games and patriotic displays like the American flag.

"Every year around the Fourth of July Americans come together in a nationwide display of unity and patriotism and brotherhood that I'm so proud to be a part of.

"I again thank our brave servicemen and servicewomen for defending our freedom and I thank my constituents for the great honor and opportunity to represent them.

"God bless you and God bless the United States of America."
